SRIWASH

SRIWASH is a system network that facilitates access to information and knowledge that is needed for Information sharing, Identification of need and issues, Better planning/ implementation, Avoiding duplication of work and Better coordination.

Objective

To provide safe drinking water and adequate sanitation to all by 2025

Immediate objective

To halve the above by 2010

Why Resource Centers?

In order to make informed decisions

►Need to know what works and what doesn’t

►Need to know what other people tried

►What was successful and what not

What are their functions?

►to tap pools of data and information from past experiences

►to record, remember and learn

►to turn past experiences into lessons for the future

►to make them accessible those who need them most

►to identify knowledge gaps and generate new knowledge

Developments in Sri Lanka

►IRC initiates Streams of Knowledge (SOK)

►March 2002 - Group of individuals and organisations who had interests got together, resulting in formation of the Core Group

►July 2002 – Core Group organises a national level work shop with the assistance of the Ministry (RWS)

►Work shop participants decide to attend to the following major aspects

►Identification of sector agencies

►Identification of existing resource centres

►Identification of sector expectations of resource centres

►Assessing the strengths & weaknesses of the identified resource centres

►At the end of the work shop the group was extended, and the Core Group was transformed in to the Steering Group

►“Development” changed to “Strengthening”

►Asian SOK members honors Sri Lanka by awarding the chair of AARC

►Initial steps to start the SRIWASH Secretariat at IWMI

►July 2003

  • Preparation of a strategic plan for next three years to obtain external support & mobilising resources
  • Made inventories of, and assessed the strengths of existing resource centres
  • Action plan for programme focus areas
  • Demonstration project in NorthCentralProvince
