WASPA
WASPA Asia project (Wastewater Agriculture, Sanitation and Poverty Alleviation in Asia) was aimed to develop methods and approaches for integrated planning of sanitation and wastewater for reuse in agriculture in the towns of Rajshahi and Kurunegala in Bangladesh and Sri Lanka respectively. It aimed to do so by carrying out action research to address these problems in both towns and develop generic intervention approach. A main component of the project is by working through so-called learning alliances (LAs). These are platforms, which bring together the main relevant stakeholders, where the stakeholders jointly learn about the issues at stake, define their solutions.
The project actions were aimed to test solutions for sanitation and decentralised wastewater management for its use in agriculture. This is based on the premise that holistic and sustainable wastewater management involves interventions in the whole chain of improved sanitation, contaminant reduction, waste treatment, disposal, use in agriculture and promotion of hygiene behaviour.
WASPA - Kurunegala
The primary target community of this project were the inhabitants of Wilgoda, Kurunegala Sri Lanka. This is a community that engage in Wastewater Agriculture. The (waste) water that they use for their agriculture purposes is from a wastewater channel that runs through the city of Kurunegala. Hence the water consists of greywater from households, blackwater from industries, clinical waste as well as excreta making the the farmer community as well as the people who live along the channel vulnerable to diseases etc.
Approach
- To Test Solutions for Sanitation and Decentralized Wastewater Management for its use in Agriculture.
- Holistic and Sustainable Wastewater Management through Intervention in the whole chain of Improved Sanitation, Contaminant Reduction, Waste Treatment, Disposal, Use in Agriculture and Promotion of Hygiene Behaviour.
- Achieved through Stakeholder involvement to facilitate the development and implementation of Participatory Action Plans (PAPs) to Test Technologies for Safe Waste Management and Application in Agriculture.
- Share Experience through Learing Alliances at different levels and learing events and build capacity.
